The main mango districts in the Punjab province in which mangoes are growing in a bulk volume are Multan, Bahawalpur, Muzzaffargarh and Rahim yar Khan. In the province of Sindh, Mir pur Khas, Hyderabad and Thatta in the province of NWFP it is grown in D.I Khan, Peshawar and Mardan.
According to one of the recent surveys, the annual estimated production of mango is over 25 million tones. The total cultivation area of Pakistan which is under fruit gardening is 853.4 thousand hectares with the production of about 7178.8 thousand tones. The area which is under mango cultivation is 167.5 thousand hectares while the overall production of 1732 thousand tones. This huge amount of mango production makes it second major fruit crop of Pakistan after citrus. Pakistan is ranked fourth in the production of mango in the whole world.
The demand of mango is increasing day by day due to various aspects which includes its specific aromatic taste, nutrient content and health benefits. In Pakistan, 250 varieties of mango are known while most important commercial cultivars of Pakistan are Dasehri, Anwar Ratul, Langra, Chaunsa, Sindhri, Maldha, and Fajri.
